AVUS CONNECT WORKSHOP

Stay tuned for more in Miami Empresarial Magazine on the 2021 Florida Council on Aging Virtual Conference from United HomeCare headquarters in #Doral, featuring the official presentation of "Youth Volunteers Busting Senior Isolation," UHC's AVUS Connect intergenerational program. Under the leadership of Shawn Martinez, a sophomore at Miami's Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, and hosted/managed by United HomeCare, the AVUS Connect program brings together a team of volunteer high school and college students to make "Friendship Calls" to local senior citizens.

The volunteers, trained and supervised by UHC staff, engage in "Friendship Calls" via Zoom, Facetime or telephone, which last 10 minutes or more and are designed to alleviate the sense of loneliness and isolation that so many older adults in our community feel. At the same time, these animated conversations provide the students with an opportunity to learn about their interlocutors' experiences, history, and interests. Now in its first year, AVUS is currently expanding its scope to recruit, train and activate more volunteers to serve South Florida's ever expanding elderly population.

The Crime Prevention Alliance of Florida and United HomeCare organized a luncheon at Las Vegas Restaurant in Downtown Doral, hosted by CPAF president Barbara Sanchez, who has recruited volunteers to work for the creation of a special monument in honor of Miami’s senior citizens.
Ms. Sanchez introduced the project's artist, sculptor Julio Cesar Hernandez, and announced that the monument will be erected at the Danny Meehan Park in Medley, Florida. She also announced that the public can purchase brick plaques in honor of their senior

family members to be placed on the memorial.
Representatives from South Florida's law enforcement divisions were recognized by Ms. Sanchez, herself a former LEO with the Miami Beach Police Department. The officers, specialists in combatting crime against seniors, work with CPAF to raise awareness and address the growing threat to that segment of our population. United HomeCare president/CEO Carlos Martinez and members of the UHC Board of Directors and team were present at the event.
